Deanne Gilson is a proud Wadawurrung woman living on Country in Ballarat, and an award-winning artist working in paint, clay, drawing and installation. Her work draws from a spiritual connection to country and culture and an acknowledgement of the lived experience of the past, present and future from an Indigenous perspective.
In her recent work she has attempted to reclaim and re-establish cultural artefacts, stories, symbols and to develop contemporary symbols that have personal connections to family history and memory. She is inspired by an examination of issues for Aboriginal women of identity, discrimination, oppression, reality and belonging, before and after colonisation.
Deanne Gilson is currently undertaking a Masters by Research that examines the collective knowledge of Wadawurrung Dreaming through visual art, challenging the Western portrayals of Wadawurrung people, and demonstrating ways in which Aboriginal women can form new connections to culture through art practices.
