Installations are a major part of my art practice and generally constructed using a multi media approach. Many pieces reflect the colonial gaze from an Aboriginal woman’s perspective and the referencing of ‘the other’, comes into play here. Installations can take up to 6 months to one year to complete and many consist of multiple objects/forms that are the same shape, colour and symbol. I also find it therapeutic to work in this way, along with achieving a unity and oneness to the overall aesthetic appearance. The repetitive process of the symbol is a subconscious and intuitive approach that stems from childhood experiences to adulthood influences. The feather, vagina, greenstone axehead, white picket fence, heart and circle (womb) are just a few examples of my personal symbology and of course dealing with being an addictive maker also helps.
